Explaining every step of the way puts the player in a “following orders” mode.This approach is not great for two reasons: One of the things I’m reluctant about during onboarding is an overwhelming amount of tooltips. Therefore, the main focus of the onboarding is to make sure the users understand what they are doing. If players leave without understanding how their actions affect the actions on screen, the chances they’ll come back are slim. This is not an easy concept to grasp, and during the first levels everything seems random. When the sum of flowers exceeds a certain point, the last flower in the chain blossoms, causing the flowers in the tiles around it to grow as well. Unlike most matching games, where the player swipes across lines of objects of the same color to make them disappear, in BBS the matched flowers are combined together, growing the last flower in the chain. Players download the game with a set of expectations of how to play a match 3 game, but BBS mechanics are slightly different. In BBS’s case, the onboarding process is a little bit tricky. If users do not understand how to play and the value of the game to them, they’ll probably never come back. The purpose of the onboarding process is to introduce new users to the product, teach them how to play and hopefully find compatibility with them so they’ll come back for another session.
